MOSCOW (FAR) — Russia announced on Tuesday that it was sending ground troops to the peninsula to take over the country's military operations. An international brigade of Russia's elite Komsomolskaya Pravda news agency announced on its website that it will be tasked with taking over military operations there. This is the first major military training for the Ukrainian military ahead of the planned military drills in the territory, known as Sevastopol.

The joint deployment follows Russia's involvement in Crimea, an area controlled by the Ukrainian authorities.

Tensions between Russia and Ukraine have escalated over pro-Russian separatists taking control of Ukrainian territory in the western portion of the Black Sea peninsula and on Tuesday, Russia's foreign minister Sergei Lavrov said that Russian servicemen will not attack Ukraine, although those forces also may act into self-defense.

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said that Russian troops will not attack Ukraine during their first military drills, although further drills might take place "later in the year".

The ministry did not disclose any other information.

U.S.-led international peacekeeping forces have been sent to support the ground invasion against pro-Russian separatists.

U.S. special forces have been involved in the operation, which was started by German forces in September as part of the Operation Minsk III.
