New Delhi (AFP) - A top-secret mission that helped set up a drone strike in Yemen helped launch a nuclear attack on a convoy of Iranian-owned ships on Wednesday, India's defense ministry said.
The strike was aimed at "concrete targets" such as Iranian-owned merchant vessels along the Iran-backed Silk-Road trade route.
Iran is a major player in the North Atlantic shipping sector, an area that includes some of the world's most important oil exporters.
Iran's navy was present in two of the two ships on Wednesday at the convoy of three Iranian ships, which entered waters off the coast of Jalalabad in the north-east of the country, Defence Minister Asim Akram said.
"I informed the Iranian navy about the attack, but the other three ships intercepted the interceptor," Akram told reporters in the capital, New Delhi, adding that two Iranian military vessels were on the way to the convoy as well.
"I told them to intercept the interceptor and the ship would be destroyed."
Akram suggested that Iran would provide the Indian Navy with drones, an option it has taken to avoid getting hit by "dumb missiles".
