A family of 3 were among those rescued who were evacuated to a refugee cabin from the Greek island of Lesbos.

Greek authorities said on Friday they had located five people, including five children, missing after a man came to pick them up at 3.15am. They said four people survived with injuries, including a 9-year-old boy and 2-year-old girl.

The father said he had left his three children to attend a beach carnival in Greece, and that no one took home any from the ordeal.

A man who helped with the rescue told the Associated Press it would be a 'tremendous journey'.

But he said: 'My children are not going to survive that, if they go to Lesbos. It will be an amazing journey.

'They can no longer survive with their family after the sea. It could be their last. We are working with the local police to bring them back to safety.'

He added: 'I have asked anyone with information about the rescue to contact the Greek authorities.' The rescue group said it had had an 'excellent meeting' with Greek authorities, and that it was only a matter of time before the rescue could resume.

Two of the men were found after they were brought back to safety to be fitted with 'preventive gear', in
