They believe he used a fake passport and a foreign trade card when he flew to Japan before flying off on Sunday.

Bodies of two men were removed from the house in New Delhi's central area on Tuesday, and investigators would be working on DNA, as well as a piece of ID provided by a neighbour, Indian police officer S Gopal said.

While the investigation has led police to believe the man used a fake passport and a foreign trade card, a person told the AFP news agency the man was not a citizen of India .

A man of the same surname, who asked not to be named, described him as 'a good guy' with a good sense of humour and a love of sports, travelling widely among Indians to Japan.

The men lived in the house, which was bought by the pair for £15,000, and had been living together for seven years.

Gopal told AFP that he had been on a vacation since December when he gave a fake passport to his girlfriend to avoid identification checks.

In the past year and a half, the two men have travelled across the country together, and each told officials how he spent his money, Gopal said.
