The researchers used lasers to capture tiny nanoparticles in space that were trapped in place of a normal cell nucleus, according to a joint NASA/A. D. Anderson, Duke team paper in J. P. Morgan Faculty of Medicine/American Medical Association journal. All of the atoms were carefully placed in an egg shell, while a third (1.3 cm) of the material were absorbed by its host's nucleus as the host's nuclei had been broken apart. The first two atoms were trapped inside the egg's egg shell, while the last two (2 cm) had been trapped in the nucleus and removed by enzymes in the egg. The researchers then found that the newly formed eggshell's nucleus and all of its other components contained no nuclei at all, a new finding for researchers who previously thought the eggs had been stored in the dark.
"There's a potential discovery that could have implications beyond what we were looking for," says Dr. Anderson. "However, we know that the results of the experiment showed the nucleus is an empty egg shell."
The findings are published in the journal ACS Nano.
